INTERNSHIPS PROGRAMME IN THE UN DPI OFFICE

The United Nations Department of Public Information offers an internship for national (citizens of Azerbaijan) and international students on a three-month basis four times a year:

* Early March to end-May (Spring Session)
* Early June to end-August (Summer Session)
* Early September to end-November (Fall Session)
* Early December to end-February (Winter Session)

The programme is normally full-time, i.e., interns are expected to work five days a week (9:00 am. - 5:00 pm) and is unpaid.

The objective of the internship programme is to provide a framework by which undergraduate and graduate students from diverse academic backgrounds may be assigned to UN DPI office where their educational experience can be enhanced through practical work assignments; to expose them to the work of the UN DPI and to provide UN DPI office with the assistance of highly qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

Required Skills:
Knowledge of MS Office products, internet navigation and research; demonstrate clear and effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to meet deadlines and maintain a flexible schedule; strong diplomatic skills in dealing with people from a variety of cultures and backgrounds; awareness of and sensitivity to a variety of cultural perspectives; awareness of prominent global issues.

Primary Responsibilities:
Interns (international and national) should possess/or enrolled in a programme for a university degree in economic or social sciences, preferably in the field of journalism, international relations and international law. Some work experience in the field of international cooperation, development assistance or humanitarian aid in their home countries would be an asset. Applicants should have a sound command of English and preferably, knowledge of one of the local languages, Azerbaijani or Russian. National interns should be fluent in English and Azerbaijani.

The intern will assist a staff member in the office in research on the topics of interest to the office and execution of day-to-day business. In the application period a job description will be submitted to the applicant. The intern may be asked to perform any task indicated in the job description or designated by the supervisor. The intern will be involved to the greatest extent possible in substantive office activities.

Interns will be provided with a supervisor who is approachable at any time and will be given all opportunities to acquire deeper insight into the functioning of the UN DPI office in Azerbaijan.
