ECLA European Summer University 2008, Berlin

The European College of Liberal Arts (ECLA) in Berlin announces its ninth International Summer University: “The Mantle of the Prophet: Demons, Saints and Terrorists”, which takes place from July 7th to August 15th 2008.

The key text is Dostoyevsky’s Demons, and the keynote theme derives from the oft-repeated reference to Dostoyevsky as “prophet.” During the six-week course, Demons becomes a central text around which to explore major moral, religious and political issues. These include the historical and intellectual roots of terrorism, its embodiments from state terror to individual violence, and its expression of nihilist and existential questions. In addressing these issues, students and faculty will augment their discussions through the reading of a variety of complementary philosophical, literary and historical texts. In addition, the special Explore Berlin component of the curriculum introduces students to some of the rich cultural offerings of the city.
